What Are Sample Books?
A sample book is a way to gather and display a number of pieces of fabric, wallpaper, etc. so that customers can closely examine the product and choose what to buy. It is a convenient way to professionally showcase particular product line options that may be available in various colors, textures, patterns, or finishes. A sample book is typically bound or fastened at one edge. People often browse through sample books when choosing upholstery fabrics and trims, window treatments, carpeting, and wallpaper. The client is actually able to touch and feel the product via the sample book. This helps people make a more informed buying decision.
There are several types of sample books, and they can be customized in different styles, shapes, and sizes to suit the requirements of the brand or retailer. Sample books are recommended for product lines that will have long-term availability. All types are highly customizable.
The following examples are common types of sample books.
Swatch booklets
Swatch booklets work well for showcasing a smaller presentation. Fabric swatches may be glued to heavier card stock for durability. The booklets are permanently bound with a custom cover design or logo. The sample swatches can be presented by material type, color family, texture, or price group. Labels identify each sample item. Some swatch booklets have one item per page. Others may be organized in a “stepped” format to show coordinating options. Swatch books are portable and easy for the retailer to store.
Stack books
The samples in a stack book are positioned directly on top of one another and permanently bound. The cover and spine will be customized. Stack books may be organized in what is known as a waterfall presentation, so that the samples partially overlap. This allows customers to view and compare multiple choices at the same time.
Page books
Page books often highlight a full textile line. They are large, durable books with heavy pages. Each page can be configured to present samples of diverse sizes. They are well suited for product lines with greater longevity.
Why use sample books?
Digital images are not a good substitute for an in-person review of a product. Sample books enable manufacturers to present their product lines to their best advantage. Customers can easily view all of the options available for a particular product in one place. It allows them to judge the quality, feel the differences between the samples, and see a true representation of the color choices. This can be invaluable to customers as they try to coordinate a new purchase with their existing décor.
